Walnut Creek Historical Fast Facts

Walnut Creek has always been considered a hub because of its central location. In fact, it was originally named The Corners being situated, as it was, where roads from Pacheco and Lafayette met. Many of Walnut Creek’s historical highlights emphasize the fast growth that occurred during the late 1800’s, due to its location.

1862 – With the establishment of the U.S. Post Office in December, The Corners is officially renamed Walnut Creek. 1871 – Walnut Creek Central School is built. After two failed attempts in 1869, residents vote to tax themselves $1,500 for a new school. 1872 – The downtown street patterns laid out in 1871–1872 by pioneer Homer Shuey on a portion of one of his family’s large cattle ranches established the street pattern for modern-day Walnut Creek. Walnut Creek Methodist Church is built on Main Street, becoming the first church in the community. 1882 – The Walnut Creek Independent newspaper begins publication on March 24; last edition is published in July 1882.
