Q&A.
Why are you passionate about public accounting?
It’s important, rewarding and fulfilling work. I’ve been involved in numerous complex accounting issues over my career. Government contractors especially need assistance with this highly specialized area of accounting, and I’ve found that integrating tax, GAAP and government accounting decisions is imperative to properly assess the complete financial implications of a decision.
Why do you like working at Mensch & Associates and MGO?
The firms offer me the opportunity to satisfy my passion for solving complex business problems. The unique nature of the organization provides me the opportunity to work, hands-on, with small closely held businesses and also to address the complex problems faced by some of our nation’s largest defense contractors.
Describe a favorite client or client story.
Several years ago I was on vacation traveling from Chicago to Michigan and I received a call from a new client. It was a small business bidding on a contract in the Iraq war zone. They were bidding against very large companies for a $30 million contract. From the back seat of the car, using phone and email we worked together, thousands of miles apart, to prepare the winning proposal. It was such a joy to see them succeed.
What qualities do you look for in job applicants?
First and foremost, candidates who are passionate and who put their hearts and souls into their work. I also look for people who spend time understanding the complete issue and the positions of others.
Who are you outside the office?
To balance the busy work schedule, I golf, ski, ride quad dirt bikes in the desert with my family, and go fly fishing all over the country.
