Why are you passionate about public accounting?
The simple answer is I enjoy working with my clients; helping them deal with the tax, accounting and financial challenges they face in their business and personal lives. Their appreciation and the personal satisfaction of having helped a client are extremely rewarding. Couple this with the intellectual challenges of coping with some of the most convoluted and arcane issues in the finance world and you have the basis for a very exciting and rewarding profession.
Why do you like working at MGO?
I like working with the other professionals here; we have some of the brightest, most talented people in the industry. I enjoy working with the new hires. Their enthusiasm and energy as they embark on their new careers is contagious. There's a bit of the teacher in me and I find it rewarding helping them develop their skills.
What is unique about your clients?
I've worked with some of my clients for over 30 years. Each of their "stories" is special to me because I've watched their businesses and families grow over the years. I've seen their kids take over their businesses and start families of their own. It gives me a great deal of pride to work with clients like these who have become lifelong friends. As I tell them, "You're not just clients; we're not just accountants."
What qualities do you look for in job applicants?
They have to be creative and they have to like people. Accounting isn't just about crunching numbers. There's a huge variety of clients in many diverse industries, so one has to be agile in working with a lot of different people and environments. It's called public accounting for a reason! In addition to the interpersonal aspect, I look for employees who are entrepreneurial and who truly want growth and challenge. The best employees are those who look for opportunities to learn rather than feeling satisfied with their level of experience.
Who are you outside the office?
My family, both immediate and extended, is what I value most. I have two sons, one in law school and one in college. In addition to being with my family, I also really enjoy golf. My wife has caught the bug in the last few years, so we play together as often as our busy schedules permit.
Who has been the most influential person in your career?
My father because he showed me the importance of integrity, honesty, the value of your word, and calling things like they are.
